Understanding Data Structuring

Anyone who is dealing with huge amounts of data should have a good understanding of data structure. Data structuring is a process that organizes data to make it more accessible and usable by software programs. There are many ways of structuring data and the most well-known ones are arrays, linked lists and dictionaries. Each has its own strengths, and it’s essential to be aware of all before deciding on the one that best fits your needs.

Linear Data Structures

Linear data structures vary depending on the programming language they are written in. They can differ in memory allocation, internal structure, and how basic operations like traversal, retrieval, insertion, and deletion are executed. A good example of linear data structures is an array, which keeps its elements in multiple memory locations that are contiguous, where each element is accessible by using an index that starts at zero. These are effective for algorithms that require access to data in a sequential fashion and can be useful to store lists of information (like dates or addresses) and performing mathematical computations.

Non-Linear Data Structures

A tree is an non-linear structure which organizes data in an order. Each record in a tree has a parent-child relationship that connects it to one or more records below. Each child record could contain data or pointers that connect to other records within the tree. A family tree is an illustration of one.
